Map your community and identify problems to solve!
Join us for Community Map, a hands-on, creative workshop where young changemakers explore what makes their neighborhood tick! Using everyday art supplies like newspapers, magazines, and craft materials, participants will build a colorful map of their local surroundings to highlight where people feel happiest, healthiest, and safest.
By building colourful community maps out of craft materials and sharing the stories behind their art, Scouts get to explore what makes their neighbourhood special! Through group discussion, participants analyse where community members feel most healthy, happy, and safe and pinpoint the exact places where improvements are needed most.
Instructions:
Using old newspapers and magazines, invite participants to create a collage that represents their community. Ask participants to cut out pictures of places, people, objects, or nature. Based on what they choose to cut out, participants will produce a map using the materials provided. Alternatively, they could draw a community map instead of making a collage.
Debrief:
When the group comes back together, each participant will introduce their community through the work of art it inspired. Discuss what are their mo st and least favourite parts of their community. Where are people most healthy / happy / safe. What about the opposite? Is there anything they’d like to change about their community? You could use the Global Goals grid to see how it relates to their maps.
