Nutrition Battle: Team Trivia

Nutrition is about much more than memorising which foods are “healthy.” Understanding nutrients and the role food plays in our bodies helps us make informed choices. The Nutrition Challenge encourages young people to learn about balanced diets, essential nutrients, healthy habits and the connection between food and physical and mental wellbeing.

This one comes directly from the manual's Nutrition Trivia Challenge, which is designed for ages 7–10, 11–14 and 15+ and specifically promotes teamwork and collaboration.

Divide yourselves into two or more teams and choose one person to be the Quiz Master. The Quiz Master reads nutrition questions aloud and teams work together to agree on an answer before responding.

  • You can prepare 10–15 questions before starting. For example:
  • Which nutrient is our body's main source of energy? Carbohydrates.
  • Which nutrient helps build and repair body tissues? Protein.
  • Why does our body need water? It helps keep the body's systems functioning properly.
  • Which nutrients are commonly found in fruit and vegetables? Fibre, vitamins and antioxidants.
  • Why is variety important in our diet? Different foods provide different nutrients.
  • Besides food, name two habits that can affect our wellbeing. For example, hydration, sleep or movement.

The manual provides these nutrition concepts, including the roles of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Give one point for each correct answer.

For a more Scout-like version, add a Challenge Round where teams have 60 seconds to name as many foods as possible belonging to a particular food group.

At the end, celebrate the winning team — but have every team share one new thing they learned before finishing.
