JOY - in a collage
Knowing what brings us joy and what we care about can help us understand ourselves better. The Mind Builders Challenge encourages young people to explore their interests and passions, communicate them to others and recognise connections between the things they enjoy and their sense of purpose.
This is adapted directly from the manual's Joyful Collage Creation activity, which uses creativity and sharing to explore personal interests and passions.
Each person gets a piece of paper or cardboard. Look through magazines and newspapers and find pictures, words, colours or ideas representing things that bring you joy or that you really care about. These could include sports, nature, music, food, animals, Scouts, friends, hobbies, places or dreams.
Cut them out and arrange them on your page to create your Joy Collage. You can also draw or write anything you can't find in the magazines.
When everyone finishes, take turns presenting your collages. Explain at least three things you included and why they are important to you.
Then look at everyone's collages together. Find at least one interest you share with somebody else and one thing another person included that you would like to know more about or try.
The manual encourages participants to share their creations, practise active listening and discover connections between their own interests and those of their peers.
