The gratitude scarf
Gratitude means noticing and appreciating the positive things, experiences and people in our lives. Practising gratitude is one of the ways we can cultivate positive emotions and support our mental wellbeing. The Mind Builders Challenge encourages young people to recognise and express positive emotions and practise gratitude as part of the Positive Emotion element of PERMA.
Sit or stand in a circle with your friends and choose one Scout scarf to be the Gratitude Scarf. One person starts by holding the scarf and choosing someone else in the circle. Before passing it to them, say one thing you genuinely appreciate about that person, something they have done, or a positive moment you have shared with them.
Step 2
The person receiving the scarf then chooses somebody else, shares something they appreciate about them and passes the scarf on. Keep going until everyone has both given and received a message of gratitude.
For one final round, pass the scarf around the circle again. This time, when you receive it, share one thing outside the group that you are grateful for today β it could be a person, place, experience, opportunity or even something very small.
