Democracy is built on foundational values and principles that we must actively remember, cherish, and protect.
In this activity, Scouts play a classic Kim's Game featuring physical objects or images representing key democratic concepts.
As items disappear from view, participants reflect on what these values mean in daily life and what happens to society when we take them for granted.
Setup & Explanation
Place 10–15 items representing core democratic values on a table or tray. Cover them with a cloth before starting. Explain to the Scouts that democracy relies on values we must remember and defend.
Observation (30 seconds)
Uncover the tray and allow Scouts 30 seconds to memorize all objects and observe what is present.
Conceal & Remove
Cover the items again. Secretly remove one or more objects (or remove them all to test complete recall).
Recall & Symbolism
Ask the Scouts to name which items were removed—and explain why those items are important for democracy.
Reflection & Discussion
Facilitate a brief group discussion using the reflection questions to help Scouts relate these symbols to real-world society.
To make it easier: Use picture cards or visual icons instead of physical objects.
To make it harder: Remove multiple items simultaneously or Provide deliberately false information to test their critical thinking skills.
Ask Scouts to explain exactly what would happen in society if a specific value were completely removed from democracy.
